Fixed income income estimator

Estimate the income a fixed income investment could generate. Enter an amount, an indicative rate, a term, and how often income is paid. Results are shown two ways: income paid out (simple) and income reinvested (compounding).

Adjust the figures to see an estimate.

Income per payment

Total income — paid out
A$5,000.00
Total income — reinvested

Estimate only and general information — not personal advice or a guarantee of return. "Paid out" assumes income is received each period (simple interest); "reinvested" assumes income is reinvested at the same rate (compounding). Actual outcomes depend on the specific product, its terms, fees, tax, and whether income is reinvested. Returns and capital are not guaranteed. Read the relevant PDS and TMD before investing.

Why consider fixed income?

Fixed income can offer more predictable income than growth assets, though it is not without risk.

Regular income

Fixed income products are generally designed to pay income at set intervals over a defined term.

Defined terms

Many fixed income investments have a known term and rate, which can help with planning cash flow.

Diversification

Fixed income may play a role in diversifying a portfolio alongside growth assets — subject to your circumstances.

Frequently asked questions

What is fixed income?
Fixed income refers to investments that generally pay a defined return over a set term — for example term deposits, bonds, and income securities. Returns and capital are not guaranteed unless specifically stated, and risks vary by product.
Is my capital at risk?
Fixed income investments carry risks, which may include capital loss, issuer default, and interest-rate risk. The level of risk depends on the specific product. Always read the PDS and TMD and consider personal advice.
Does IFA Private Wealth Advisors Pty Ltd provide personal advice?
The information on this website is general in nature. Whether personal advice is provided depends on your engagement with us. IFA Private Wealth Advisors Pty Ltd holds AFSL 524103; our Financial Services Guide sets out the services we can provide.
How is IFA Private Wealth Advisors Pty Ltd paid?
We may receive fees or commissions from providers, which will be disclosed in accordance with our obligations. This does not change the terms a provider offers you.
What does "fixed income" actually mean?
Fixed income is a broad term for investments that pay a set or predictable return over a defined period. The most common example for everyday savers is a term deposit, where you lock money away for an agreed term at an agreed interest rate. Other fixed income products include government and corporate bonds and income securities. The "fixed" refers to the defined interest and term — it does not necessarily mean the return or your capital is guaranteed, which depends on the specific product.
What is a term deposit?
A term deposit is an account with a bank or other authorised deposit-taking institution (ADI) where you deposit a set amount for a fixed term — commonly anywhere from one month to five years — at a fixed interest rate. In return for locking the money away, you generally earn a higher, guaranteed rate than an everyday savings account. Withdrawing early usually requires notice and may reduce the interest you earn.
What is the deposit guarantee (Financial Claims Scheme)?
The Financial Claims Scheme (FCS) is an Australian Government guarantee that protects deposits held with authorised deposit-taking institutions (ADIs) — such as banks, building societies and credit unions — up to $250,000 per account holder, per institution. If a covered institution were to fail, eligible deposits (including most term deposits) up to that limit would be protected. The limit applies per institution, so holding deposits across multiple ADIs can increase the total protected. Not all fixed income products are covered — the FCS applies to deposits with ADIs, not to bonds or other investments.
What is APY, or the interest rate "p.a."?
"p.a." means per annum — the interest rate expressed as an annual figure. For example, 5.00% p.a. on a 12-month term deposit of $10,000 would earn roughly $500 in interest over the year (before tax). Some products pay interest at maturity, others monthly, quarterly or annually — how often interest is paid, and whether it is reinvested, affects your total return. Always check whether a rate is for the whole term or per annum.
What happens if I withdraw before the term ends?
Most term deposits require you to give notice (often around 31 days) to withdraw early, and an early-withdrawal adjustment or reduced interest rate usually applies. This is why term deposits suit money you won't need during the term. Check the specific product's terms before investing.
How is interest on fixed income taxed?
In Australia, interest earned on deposits and most fixed income is generally treated as assessable income and taxed at your marginal tax rate in the year it is earned. Your institution will usually report interest to the ATO. This is general information only — for your personal tax position, consult a registered tax agent or accountant.
Are the rates on this website guaranteed?
No. The rates shown are indicative and sourced from providers at a point in time. Rates change frequently and are not offers. Always confirm the current rate, term, minimum and conditions directly with the provider before opening any product.
